Keys can be linked so that solving one key can load another. A key to fishes, for example, can
lead a user to a key to more specific groups when a major grouping has been identified.
For example a Key to Fishes might provide a means to quickly identify an unknown fish into one of a few dozen major groupings.
This key can then link to more refined keys that have more specific criteria for making sharper distinctions between more closely related taxa. Dividing keys like this prevents character lists from being too long and too specific.
XID can also link out to specific web URLs. Developers can create their own taxa page containing multi-media objects (including web pages) or they can have XID default to a remote URL instead of loading a X:ID taxa page. This allows XID to be developed as a front-end to an existing application which may already have taxa-specific information. The XML/XSLT features of X:ID allow the key to be fully integrated with the user interface of this application for a seamless experience.
